-He is the President of the University School of Medical Biotechnology, and Director of the PhD program in Complexity in Medicine and Life Science, University of Torino.

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY:

Main lines of research: studies on  mediators of inflammation with particular regards to the biochemical characterization, the cellular origin and the biological activities of platelet-activating factor (PAF); studies on the pathophysiological role of complement components with particular regards to C5a and C3a-desArg and terminal component of complements; studies on the biological effect of  proinflammatory cytokines with particular regard to TNF; studies on the biological role of neutrophils and platelet-derived cationic proteins in inflammation; studies on the molecular mechanisms involved in leukocyte-endothelial interaction; studies on the immune mechanisms involved in renal and lung injury with particular regards to circulating and in situ formed immune-complexes; development of a model of antibody-mediated endothelial injury of the lung; studies on the mediators involved in the progression of renal injury; studies on  mediators and receptors involved in septic shock; studies on mediators involved on tumor angiogenesis. In this field, he contributed to the definition of some pathogenic mechanisms involved in neoangiogenesis with particular regards to the angiogenic mechanism of TNF, PAF and HGF. Currently, he is interested in the role of bone-marrow derived or resident stem cells in renal tissue regeneration as well as in the molecular mechanisms driving stem cell recruitment and differentiation. Moreover, he is working on the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy.

Prof Camussi has been the principal investigator in research projects funded by both national (Health Institute, Italian Association for Cancer Research, Italian Association for Research on Stem Cells, Italian Ministry of Education, University, and Research) and European (Kistem Project, European 6th Framework Programme on Research, Technological Development and Demonstration, and Marie Curie Actions; Nanotechnology) funding agencies.
